Shack / Backup Power

Battery backup power for the shack in the event of an outage is provided by the following components:

Western Mountain Radio Super Powergate 40S
Western Mountain Radio PWRguard
Western Mountain Radio PWRcheck
Powerwerx 30 Amp Desktop Power Supply
Duralast 115AH Deep Cycle Marine Battery x2
Custom Built Plywood Battery Box

This setup provides up to 40 amps of continuous 12V backup power to the shack. Under normal operation, all equipment is powered by the 25 amp Powerwerx desktop power supply. In the event of a power outage the Super Powergate device will instantly switch to battery backup power. When AC main power comes back on it will automatically switch back to the power supply source, while simultaneously recharging the battery with its built-in, four-stage charger. All components are mounted in a Tac-Comm carrier for portable operation. Two 115 ah marine batteries comprise the battery bank. These are located in a sealed plywood box under the shack bench, which is vented to the outside via 1/2″ PVC pipe. A PWRcheck DC analyzer is used to monitor volts, amps, amp hours, wattage, and other variables. The PWRcheck is also connected to the PC for real time monitoring via a software interface.
